Lake Qarun is an internationally designated “Important Bird Area,” where thousands of migratory birds rest during their winter migration pattern south. Flamingos, grey herons, spoonbills and many duck species, to name a few, flocked to the lake during the fall.

Flamingos,with extremely long neck and legs and curiously shaped bill. Adult has pale pink plumage with black flight feathers, and pink bill with black tip. Forages by sweeping bill from side to side through water with head upside down , often submerged.  Breeds in isolated colonies on salt lakes in Turkey, but departs in autumn to spend the winter mainly in coastal areas, especially around the Salt lakes of northern Egypt ( Lake Qaroun, Wadi Rayan Lakes ).

There are variety of many birds in Fayoum that you can watch and discover all over the year, but usually the best time we recommend and known as the season of these Birds in Fayoum is from October till the end of April as the numbers and the kinds of birds are multiplied. Fayoum is an amazing bird watching destination in Egypt, very famous for its tasty fruits and vegetables. Birds migrate to the oasis for the lush plants and the waters of Lake Quarun, the largest salt water lake in Egypt and one of the oldest natural lakes in the world. Here you’ll find Grebes, coots, ducks and shorebirds during winter.

In its South-Western part, the Fayoum depression is also home to the Rayyan Valley, or Wadi Ar-Rayyan, which covers 11,450 hectares of lakes, 1,580 hectares of wetlands and 160,949 hectares of desert lands. The area has been declared as a protected area in 1989.
