Fayoum is a city in Egypt located about 80 kilometers southwest of Cairo. It is known for its natural beauty, with vast lake and desert landscapes, as well as its archaeological sites. The city has a long history, dating back to the Old Kingdom period of ancient Egypt. It was an important center of trade and agriculture during the Greco-Roman period and was home to several famous Coptic monasteries. The most popular attractions in Fayoum are its natural beauty spots such as Lake Qarun, one of the largest lakes in Egypt which offers great opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing and bird watching; Wadi El Rayan Protected Area which is home to several endangered species; and Wadi El Hitan Protected Area which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique fossilized remains of whales that lived millions of years ago.
