The Egyptian-Russian archaeological mission working at the archaeological site of Deir Al-Banat in Fayoum has unearthed a collection of 28 gold dinars and five small coins.

Gold dinars from the Abbasid era unearthed in Fayoum

They were found wrapped in a linen roll tied to a clay seal bearing unclear symbols. Osama Talaat, Head of the Islamic, Coptic and Jewish Antiquities sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities; describes the discovery as the most important in the area; given that it is the first season of the Egyptian-Russian expedition in the northern part of the archaeological area.

This was where a collection of mummies dating back to the Greco-Roman era, were previously found. This reflects, he added, that the area was used during different historical periods between Greek, Roman, Coptic and the Islamic period.

The discovery consists of 16 dinars from the era of the Caliph Al-Muqtadir Billah (295-317 AH / 908-932 AD) as well as five parts of gold dinars from the era of Caliph Al-Muqtadir.

This is in addition to 10 dinars from the era of Caliph Al-Radi Billah (322-329 AH / 934-940 CE) and two dinars from the era of Caliph Al-Mu'tasim Billah (218-227 AH / 833-842 AD). The Russian mission has been working at Deir Al-Banat area since 2003 where they since then unearthed several coffins and mummies. gold dinars

Qaret Rusas Roman remains a peninsula in Lake Qarun

Qaret Rusas peninsula in Lake Qarun

The Roman remains at Qaret Rusas are located on a peninsula in Lake Qarun. The few remains on the surface that show that this is an antiquities site are few decorated limestone blocks and traces of mudbrick walls. It is clear that the site has been covered by the water of Lake Qarun at an unknown time for an unknown period.

Not only is the surface completely leveled, but pot sherds and lime stone flakes are covered with a thick layer of calcium carbonate, which usually is indicative of a stand of 30-40 cm deep water.

In order to understand the lay-out of the village, without having to excavate, the project did a magnetic survey. The map shows clear wall lines and streets in an orthogonal pattern, typical for the Greco-Roman period.

el-Qarah el-Hamra

A site that is not mentioned in the literature was discovered by the team at a distance of about 5 km north-west of Qaret Rusas. The site for now has been named el-Qarah el-Hamra (after the name of the peninsula) and is located at the same level (-40 m ASL) as Qaret Rusas. This area requires a similar initial approach as Qaret Rusas. For the 2004 season an extensive geophysical survey will have to provide a record of the antiquities present. While determining the extent of el-Qarah el-Hamra the team noticed that at least half of the site has been disturbed by very recent and ongoing agricultural development.

Egyptian pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty Amenemhat III coin Graeco-Roman period

Egyptian pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty Amenemhat III coin Graeco-Roman period

This coin forms part of the 'nome coinage', struck under several emperors starting from Domitian and ending with Antoninus Pius. The division of Egypt into nomes (smaller districts) had its roots in the pharaonic administration, but continued to be used in the Graeco-Roman period. On the reverse of the obols struck by Hadrian (probably for the emperor's decennalia), the respective nomes are identified through the legend and a local deity is depicted. This coin was struck for the Arsinoites, so named by Ptolemy II for his wife and sister Arsinoe II, although the region is better known as the Fayoum today. Ancient life in the Fayoum is particularly well known thanks to the large finds of papyri there.

Egyptian pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty Amenemhat III

The figure depicted on the reverse is Amenemhat III, an Egyptian pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty, who ruled from circa 1831 to 1786 BCE. This makes him the oldest historical figure to be depicted on an ancient coin. Amenemhat oversaw an important land reclamation project in the Fayoum at Hawara, a pyramid of his along with the remains of a mortuary temple can still be seen today. This temple complex was known as the 'Labyrinth' in Graeco-Roman Egypt and even formed something of a tourist attraction.
